The James Island Public Service District (JIPSD), Charleston Water System (CWS), the Town of James Island, and our state agencies and representatives have been working diligently to improve the water quality in the James Island Creek. The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (formerly DHEC) has identified the James Island Creek Watershed as an impaired waterbody due to high levels of fecal bacteria. Part of our plan to combat this issue involves connecting property owners with septic systems to the public sewer system and properly abandoning septic tanks on parcels on or near this watershed. The JIPSD will install a conventional gravity collection system which will include construction of a pump station, gravity sewers, service lines, and service connections within the public roadways in Clarks Point. Work is anticipated to begin at the end of October 2024 and will last for approximately 18 months within existing SCDOT Rights-of-Way. Traffic control will minimize disruptions.
