This holiday closure will affect your Solid Waste Services collection schedule. Please see below for details.

On Tuesday, November 19, 2019 the Solid Waste Services Department was made aware that Charleston County Bees Ferry Landfill was planning on discontinuing accepting man-made debris from municipalities. On Wednesday, November 20, 2019 the Department was told that beginning Monday, November 25, 2019 all man-made debris would need to be hauled to Republic’s Spring Grove Facility at 8100 Palmetto Commerce Pkwy, Ladson, SC 29456.

In order to minimize the financial impact of the increased hauling distance, the following changes have been made regarding the amount of construction debris and bulk materials that will be picked up:

• • • Limit to 2 bulk items or 1 claw scoop of materials generated by the homeowner per week (1 claw scoop is the equivalent of what would fit in a regular 96-gallon roll-cart)
    • Property owners or managers will be responsible for any property clean outs resulting from evictions or other tenant related issues
    • As a reminder, prior ordinance/regulations state construction and demo materials generated by contractors need to be hauled by the contractor or homeowner

These changes will begin on March 1^st, 2020 and allowed items will be picked up weekly on your regular pick-up day. Please place only the new allowed amount of bulk and construction material curbside each week (Limit to 2 bulk items or 1 claw scoop of materials generated by the homeowner per week). An example of a bulk item would be furniture, mattresses, box springs, etc.

Residents are still allowed to bring debris at no charge to the Bees Ferry Convenience Center at 1344 Bees Ferry Rd, Charleston, SC 29414.  We also are encouraging residents to try to repurpose, reuse and recycle furniture, clothing and certain building materials (windows, doors, decking etc.) to reduce the number of trips to the landfill.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day our offices will be closed Monday, January 20th.  All garbage, yard debris, and bulk item collection will be done on a one-day slide. Regular collection operations resume Monday, January 27th.

A Sanitary Sewer Overflow occurred on Monday 12/23/2019 at 1:45pm at a manhole near JIPSD Pump Station 2 (1895 Central Park Rd) resulting in an estimated 5,500-6,500 gallons of wastewater entering James Island Creek. This event was due to heavy rainfall and flooding proximate to the Pump Station.

A Sanitary Sewer Overflow occurred on Tuesday 12/24/2019 at 9:01am at 820 Waterloo Dr resulting in an estimated 4,500 gallons of wastewater entering the lake between Waterloo Dr and Whispering Marsh Dr. This event was due to heavy rain and high tide in the adjacent areas.

Please exercise caution and limit your exposure to the nearby waterways for the next week.

Our goal is to transport wastewater safely to Plum Island Treatment Plant, but the unfortunate weather conditions prevented this. SC DHEC has been notified.

The holidays are rapidly approaching! JIPSD Offices will be closed December 24th – 25th and January 1st.

Solid Waste Services will be operating on a limited schedule. Please look carefully at the collection schedule below, as it may differ from previous years. ** Yard debris and man-made item collection will be made up throughout the week. Please put these items out as soon as possible, as debris crews will be very limited on Fridays. In the event crews are unable to complete yard debris and bulk item collection, remaining debris will be collected the following week on your regular pickup day.**
